Powhatan Road Solar Farm is a 5 MW community solar project on 24 acres in King George County, Virginia. Developed by ESA, the project will participate in Dominion Energy’s Virginia Shared Solar Program, with at least 50 percent of capacity reserved for low- to moderate-income households.
After decades of working a 158-acre farm, the landowner is no longer able to manage the land at the same intensity. Rather than sell the property, 24 acres are being leased for solar, providing steady retirement income while allowing the landowner to continue living on the farm.
The project is sited on the western portion of the property and is designed to maintain a low visual profile with buffering and setbacks that limit off-site visibility. Powhatan Road Solar Farm is expected to serve approximately 1,000 households and deliver an estimated $200,000 in annual electricity savings.
Construction is expected to last four to six months, followed by 30 to 35 years of operation with minimal ongoing activity. The project includes long-term decommissioning and environmental protections.
As part of ESA’s commitment to the local community, the project has contributed $1,000 to Love Thy Neighbor Food Pantry and $1,000 to the King George Fall Festival.
