Carpenter Hill Power

Battery Energy Storage

Charlton, MA

Development

Carpenter Hill Power is a 150 MW / 600 MWh battery energy storage system on a 15-acre site at 131 Carpenter Hill Road in Charlton, Massachusetts. Developed by ESA, the project will connect to an existing National Grid 115kV substation and deliver grid stabilization services to the ISO New England regional grid. The facility is projected to avoid more than 45,000 metric tons of CO2 annually by displacing gas peaker generation.

The project site is forested land leased from longtime Charlton landowners. The lease provides long-term income while the family retains ownership of the property.

The project is sited adjacent to an existing transmission corridor and is designed to maintain a low visual and noise profile. The 15-acre footprint is compact relative to the project’s grid contribution and includes setbacks and screening to limit off-site visibility.

Construction is expected to last 12 to 18 months, followed by 30 to 35 years of operation with minimal ongoing activity. The project includes long-term decommissioning and battery recycling protections.

As part of ESA’s commitment to the Charlton community, Carpenter Hill Power is developing a Community Benefit Plan in partnership with local residents to direct investment toward priorities identified through public engagement.
