AdventHealth is a leading healthcare provider dedicated to whole-person care, with a network spanning nine U.S. states. Through its hospitals, urgent care centers, and specialty clinics, AdventHealth serves diverse communities while embracing a deep commitment to environmental stewardship. As a signatory of the HHS Climate Pledge, the organization has set ambitious goals: to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
After working with a consultant to establish a baseline of their emissions, AdventHealth faced difficulties in translating their climate commitments into tangible progress. Despite a strong dedication to their pledge, they saw no initial reductions in emissions due to limited internal resources and a small sustainability team tasked with overseeing a vast portfolio of more than 800 facilities.
This challenge was further amplified by their geographic footprint across nine states—each with unique utility regulations, energy markets, and policy environments. AdventHealth needed a strategic partner that could help them navigate the complexity, prioritize action, and develop scalable solutions that would deliver both environmental and financial impact.
AdventHealth partnered with ESA to develop a comprehensive, data-driven decarbonization roadmap. ESA helped prioritize facilities across the network based on emissions reduction potential and financial returns, ensuring the most impactful opportunities were identified first. To launch their clean energy journey at scale, AdventHealth transformed their corporate campus into a renewable energy research and development hub—testing technologies, refining best practices, and standardizing equipment and processes to enable repeatable deployment across the entire system.
ESA also supported AdventHealth in understanding the financial and operational implications of the Inflation Reduction Act. This included identifying funding mechanisms, evaluating project economics, and guiding decisions on how to manage underperforming opportunities—all to ensure long-term success and resilience in their clean energy program.
This collaborative approach provided AdventHealth with a clear and scalable strategy to meet its climate goals across a diverse and complex portfolio. The partnership enabled the organization to shift from planning to execution with confidence—turning a decentralized challenge into a system-wide, actionable initiative. With a strategic roadmap, proven processes, and financial clarity, AdventHealth is now well-positioned to drive measurable emissions reductions and lead the healthcare sector toward a more sustainable future.
“AdventHealth is pursuing sustainability initiatives that help ensure the long-term well-being of our team members, patients, communities, business and environment. This solar installation will help reduce our impact on the environment while demonstrating our commitment in a significant and tangible way,”
